See the Light

Being single at this time of year is so overrated. Long summer evenings can be, well, a bit long.

Tired of staring at the walls?

Light up your life with high-tech light-emitting wallpaper by Dutch industrial product designer Jonas Samson. Flat, simple and deceptive by day, the beautiful wallpaper can be easily switched on or off when you want to shed some light on your lounging or illuminate while you ruminate.

Still bored? The dazzling designs have a striking appeal, so you could always invite someone round to enjoy the view.

Now there's a bright idea.

Switch off the lights...

This phrase is probably one of the most repeated in homes today; with escalating electricity costs and children who inevitably never remember to turn anything off; help is at hand.

Light within the home can be made more efficient and environmentally friendly with a few simple additions. These technology-based conservation products are called Passive Infrared modules (PIR's) which are a range of simple, effective time delay modules.
"Passive infrared detection" is basically the detection of a change in temperature, often from body heat. If someone walks into an area protected by a sensor with Passive Infrared (PIR) Detection, then their body heat is detected, and the sensor is triggered. When the temperature is returned to its normal level, the motion sensor resets ensuring electricity is not being consumed unnecessarily thereby helping to reduce electricity costs and protect the environment.
The range of PIR's can be either ceiling mounted for discretion or housed in a single gang switch plate and is therefore suitable for most existing installations and an easy to install light switch replacement.

Most PIR's also have integral time delay switches.

In bathrooms and toilets PIR's are also adapted to run the extractor fan only when the room is occupied.

PIR's are very useful in basements and cellars to give you a safe path upstairs, knowing the lights will switch themselves off behind you.

Handy in Utility rooms when your arms are full of laundry or a bowl of freshly arranged flowers. No need to remember to return later!

Know your garden lights will switch off automatically as you leisurely clear away your 'sundowners'.

In an age of environmental responsibility, you simply cannot afford to leave lights on unnecessarily. With these innovative products you will almost certainly notice an immediate reduction in your monthly bills and your carbon footprint will improve, as will your sanity. No more nagging, surely a win win situation.

Chelsea: behind the scenes

Every Spring, gardeners come in droves to see the wonders that lay in wait for them at the glorious Chelsea Flower Show. Exhibitors from around the globe, stretching as far as Trinidad & Tobago and as close as Chelsea itself, present tantalising landscapes to their green-fingers fans.

During the 5 day exhibition 157,000 visitors will pour into this exterior haven to view the fascinating and varied displays of landscaping, planting, stonework and water features, as well as the hundreds of stalls and exhibitors offering an array of garden-related paraphernalia. Whether attending for inspiration or to simply appreciate the displays, the Chelsea flower show holds its reputation of utmost excellence within the world of flora.

Whilst navigating through the hordes of people and trying to steal a glimpse of the idyllic show-gardens, it is easy to forget that an immense amount of hard work, time and money has gone into creating this annual display. Each and every one of the 44 gardens has a different story of the behind-the-scenes-efforts required to create such a wondrous offering.

Only four days before the deadline, the normally-immaculate lawn is strewn with trucks, wheelbarrows, ladders, soil, up-rooted trees and the largest collection of hi-viz jackets ever to be seen on the north side of the river. Site coordinators rush round from garden to garden, providing support for issues from water pressure to electrics, ensuring that each landscaper is working within their plot boundaries and creating the scheme that was agreed and signed off by the RHS committee almost 4 months before.

This year, Light IQ has the pleasure of working with Urbanware to create 'Quilted Velvet', a tranquil garden, inspired by the designs of Escher. The concept is a space in which to escape the stresses of adult life, a place where the minds eye can wander and imagination reigns. The garden's skeleton is based on the infinity symbol, made entirely from rescued water mill slates and complete with a giant red ant. The lighting scheme compliments the purpose of the garden as a space of relaxation and escape; soft illumination gentle glows from behind the glass arch; the texture of the willow trunks are accentuated with up-lighting and light mimics the movement within the depths of the waterfall pool.

Before...

After...

The joint efforts of all landscapers and exhibitors, culminates in the grand launch and judging of the gardens on 19th May to members of the Royal Family and the press, followed by the public opening for five days.

This prestigious event allows designers to demonstrate their landscaping skills and styles, as well as to revel in the honour of being invited to take part in the most famous flower show in Britain.

Wardrobe Wonder

Staying with my mother recently who, at 87 years old, remains beautifully groomed and careful of her appearance, she turned and said how glad she was that the days had lengthened and that with the sun shining through the bedroom in the morning she could see the colours of her clothes in her wardrobe, finding it so much easier to get dressed knowing that she was wearing nothing that clashed!

Not all of us have the finance to redesign our whole house, but just changing one thing at a time to enhance our lifestyle and make it a little easier, can make a real difference. Rafaela wrote in her blog that 'task lighting' had changed her parent's home from a 100w pendant light to a multi-tasking room with a warm and homely ambience. This same principle applied to a couple cost effective wardrobe lights in my mother's home; she now almost anticipates winter when she will still be able to see all the colours in her wardrobe!

After this minor addition, she is quite unfazed by technology and is wondering where next to put lighting to such great effect.

All wardrobe lights are a practical solution and will suit many different situations; you may not want to change lamps therefore LEDs would be perfect, or you may not want to wire up your wardrobe therefore battery powered lights would suit you. Sensors detect movement and will turn themselves off after a short period of time giving your lamp a longer life and saving on electricity.

Whichever type of wardrobe light you choose it will certainly help the morning blues seeing an array of colour!

This Rail light has an integrated fluorescent lamp. There is a ballast built into the assembly housing, and a plastic cover for easier gliding which is designed to protect the profile against scratching.

Magic Lite Illuminated Wardrobe Tube with LED Lights

This battery operated wardrobe rail is fitted with evenly spaced LEDs, to give an overall light. The LEDs will not need changing like ordinary lamps, but you may need to keep some spare batteries to hand.

This illuminated wardrobe tube comes in two sizes. The motion sensor detects movement and the light remains on for approximately 30 seconds.
