OWL - Objects with Light

UK based Lighting designer, Georgiosi, pushes all design boundaries set with traditional decorative light to create the magnificent collection of objects with light improvised through form, function, and aesthetic.

The concept is simple and widely practiced throughout the product design industry of the past and present. This work is based on reclaiming the functions of used or found objects or materials. Their functions have been re-applied practically into lifestyle to describe new forms from old forms that function mainly as desirable objects with light.

Georgiosi describes "Lighting is my passion, Design is my spice, Music is my fuel, Inspiration is my orgasm..."

Light and sound are the principle mediums that conduct the processes and techniques needed to orchestrate this flurry of materials with forms and functions. These objects use material and form to sculpt the omittance of light with rendering results of light and shadow that transform interior surfaces into highly decorative picturesque environments.

I adore how Georgiosi uses unusual everyday items to create these decadent pieces of lighting art. My favourites have to be the screwed light and slinky!

Thinking outside the box

Winner of the best of the best in the German Red Dot design competition in 2007, the Open box is one of a series of distinctive and rather quirky luminaries designed by independent Swedish designers forming the Art of Light range.

Light from perforations in the lower lamp enclosure allows a pattern of light to fall on the back of the upward lamp enclosure creating an attractive dim glow which contrasts with the high levels of light projected onto the ceiling. This effect is subtle and intriguing as the eye tries to link and understand this inner glow with the ceiling brightness.

"We wanted to create an impression of air and lightness. A pendant luminaire can easily be perceived as enclosed and heavy - as a box suspended from the ceiling." said Gustav Nord.

Open box is available in two lengths - 1200mm and 1500mm and two colour combinations, black and white and grey and white.

Stealth Pendant

"Stealth" captures that moment during an explosion of structure where there is beauty in the chaotic. The movement within this form adds a dynamic edge to any environment. Light is energy after all.

It is the concept of London designer Antonio Arevalo who now specialises in lighting. Also adds to those green credentials with all the packaging 100% recyclable.

Composed of a single plan of smooth Perspex folded into a simple origami-shape, this pendant lamp dubbed "Stealth", proves the age old quote "less is more".

Anemona

Exhibited at the SaloneSatellite in Moscow, Anemona positions itself uniquely on any surface, making it infinitely configurable.

Designed by Igor Pinigan, the lamp uses heavy glass balls in the bottom to stabilise it at any angle without affecting the light. No word on how the sculpture is powered, but I'm hoping it's kinetic based and you have to punch the thing like a blow-up clown to keep it going.
