Safety is the main motivational factor when deciding on swimming pool lighting, however because of the vastness of the space, the simplicity of clean-lined architecture and the effects of illumination and water, consider the pool to be a blank canvass of opportunities.

Swimming pool lighting provides a range of opportunities because of the voluminous space they offer. Colour can be maximised in this area with the use of small but powerful LED’s.

With large swimming pool areas, fluorescents light sources are a great way of achieving the appropriate light levels needed for the space. Whether linear or compact, fluorescents provide great volumes of light whilst helping you to be energy efficient and to achieve the mandatory 25% of efficient lighting that must be considered - click here to read more about Part L1a of the mandatory building regulations.

Fluorescents can now be dimmed, coloured, waterproofed and come in a variety of warm and cool colour temperatures allowing you maximum flexibility for your swimming pool lighting design.

Subterranean pools lack natural light however there is no reason that they should forgo the illusion of daylight with the use of artificial effects. Creating a dropped coffered ceiling or shadow gap can provide volumes of light to the space in any colour temperature of white from cool to warm, without the source being seen and therefore creating the effect of daylight streaming in to the pool.

The décor of the pool room must be considered along side the lighting, as coloured walls will create a very different effect than plain white decoration. The surface of the pool itself can add to the effect of the lighting as it will create a perfect mirror of the lighting above it. Swimming pool lighting normally takes on an architectural and modern style although IP rated chandelier’s and wall lights can be utilised for more traditional schemes depending on their distance away from the water source.
